Ohio's 6th District

The 6th district is the State's  longest Congressional district, spanning the eastern border of Ohio from Lucasville to the suburbs of Youngstown.

 

Population: 631,000 (2000 Census) 

 

 

Interesting Facts:

There are more than 800 farms located in Belmont County.

 

Columbiana County is the birthplace of Harvey Firestone (1868-1938) founder of Firestone Tire & Rubber Co.

 

Gallia County was settled by French immigrants who had been cheated out of their Scioto Valley land.

 

Jefferson County is the birthplace of singer and actor Dean Martin.

 

The Rome Beauty apple was developed in and named for Rome Township in Lawrence County.

 

The Butler Institute of American Art in Mahoning County is the first structure ever built in the United States dedicated to house priceless works by American artists.

 

Buffington Island in Meigs County is the site of the only Civil War battle fought in Ohio. It is also the site of a prehistoric Indian mound.

 

The Monroe County Fair has been a local attraction for 152  years. The first fair was held in 1850 on the grounds of the Monroe Academy near Woodsfield.

 

The first oil well in the country was drilled near Caldwell in Noble County in 1812.

 

Branch Rickey, the baseball manager who developed the baseball farm system and who signed Jackie Robinson, was from Scioto County.

 

Washington County's Marietta, Ohio’s first city, is known as the “birthplace of the Northwest Territory.”
