STEARNS CALLS HEARING TO EXAMINE COLLEGE FOOTBALL'S BOWL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES (BCS) SYSTEM

COLLEGE FOOTBALL IS BIG BUSINESS AND BCS DISTINCTIONS DETERMINE REVENUE

WASHINGTON, DEC. 5, 2005 - "The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) system relies on computer rankings, margin of victory, strength of schedule, and other data to match up college teams for the bowl games," said Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL), Chairman of the Commerce, Trade & Consumer Protection Subcommittee, which has jurisdiction over the sports industry.  "College football is big business and the BCS system determines the revenues colleges receive from the series.  In this hearing we will review the BCS system."

The hearing will be held on Wednesday, December 7, at 10:00 a.m. in room 2123 RHOB.  "Although the BCS system got the national championship right this year, it has a long record of producing disputes and of leaving the national champion unsettled," explained Stearns.  "I am not interested in legislation, but rather I seek a frank discussion on the workings of the BCS and how it impacts college football."

Although the witness list is not final, the following are expected to testify:
Mr. James E. Delany, Commissioner, Big Ten Conference;
Mr. William Johnstone, Chairman, Rose Bowl Management Committee;
Dr. Robert Khayat, Chancellor, The University of Mississippi;
Mr. Derrick Fox, Chairman, Football Bowl Association, President and Chief Executive Officer, Alamo Bowl;
Mr. John Junker, President and Chief Executive Officer, Fiesta Bowl; and
Mr. Kevin Weiberg, Coordinator, Bowl Championship Series, Commissioner, Big XII Conference.
