STEARNS CONCLUDES HEARING ON CAR TITLE FRAUD AND PROTECTING CONSUMERS

WITNESSES CALL FOR NATIONAL DATABASE FILLING GAPS IN STATE LAWS AND FOR NEW FEDERAL LEGISLATION

WASHINGTON, MAR. 1, 2006 - "The practice of passing off flood-damaged or salvaged vehicles as ready for the road through cleaning or 'washing' their titles is a serious problem for consumers," stated Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL), Chairman of the Commerce, Trade & Consumer Protection Subcommittee.  "'Title washing' allows a thief to eliminate effectively negative title 'brands' such as 'salvaged' and 'flood damaged' from an imperfect title.  It seems to me that the problem of title fraud in one that can be solved, or at least greatly reduced, by allowing greater and more immediate access to information about a car's history, as well as creating more uniform standards nationwide for title branding designation, like salvaged and flood damaged."

STEARNS JOINS HOUSE IN HONORING TUSKEGEE AIRMEN

STEARNS COSPONSOR OF BILL RECOGNIZING WW II VETERANS WHO SERVED IN DISTINGUISHED ALL-BLACK SQUADRON

WASHINGTON, FEB. 28, 2006 - "As a veteran and co-chairman of the Congressional Air Force Caucus, I am proud to cosponsor this legislation honoring these men who overcame racial discrimination to establish a distinguished combat record," stated Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Ocala).  "Because of racial segregation, black pilots were trained separately at an airfield near Tuskegee, Alabama.  By the end of the war, nearly 1,000 pilots went through training at Tuskegee, with 450 serving overseas and 150 losing their lives serving our nation."

The House approved H.R. 1259, authorizing the president to award a congressional gold medal to the Tuskegee Airmen. Prior to the Tuskegee Airmen, all combat pilots had been white. In 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered the creation of an all black flight training program to train black Americans as military pilots.  The first classes of Tuskegee Airmen were trained to be fighter pilots for the famous 99th Fighter Squadron, slated for combat duty in North Africa.  Additional pilots were assigned to the 332nd Fighter Group, which flew combat along with the 99th Squadron from bases in Italy.

Added Stearns, "The Tuskegee Airmen inspired revolutionary reform in the Armed Forces, paving the way for full racial integration in the Armed Forces.  The strength and courage of the Tuskegee Airmen serve as an inspiration to all Americans, regardless of skin color or nationality."

STEARNS SCORES AN "A" WITH NATIONAL TAXPAYERS UNION

SECURES GROUP'S "TAXPAYERS' FRIEND AWARD"

WASHINGTON, FEB. 23, 2006 - "From my very first day in Congress, I have kept in mind how my votes impact the American taxpayer," said Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Ocala).  "I am proud of my record on tax relief and fiscal responsibility, and I deeply appreciate this recognition by the National Taxpayers Union."

The National Taxpayers Union today released its annual congressional rating on votes that significantly affect taxes, spending, debt, and regulatory burdens on consumers and taxpayers.  Stearns scored an "A" rating, earning the "Taxpayers Friend Award."  The rating is based on votes cast in the first session of the 109th Congress.  "Rep. Stearns' pro-taxpayer score was one of the best in the entire House," stated John Berthoud, President of the National Taxpayers Union.  "By consistently voting to reduce federal spending, taxes, and debt, Cliff Stearns has truly earned the title, 'Taxpayers' Friend.'"

Stearns is one of only three members of the Florida delegation to receive this award.  The National Taxpayers Union was established in 1969 to educate taxpayers, the media, and elected officials on a non-partisan basis on the merits of limited government and low taxes.
