STATEMENT OF CLIFF STEARNS ON THE FIVE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11

WASHINGTON, SEPT. 11, 2006 - "The morning of September 11th, 2001, shattered the belief that we could some how separate our nation from the troubles of the world.  The fact that we cherish democracy, religious freedom, and diversity and equality made us the target of terrorism.  Although the forces of terror had waged war on us for years, we did not understand the task before us until 9/11.  We must continue to combat terrorism throughout the globe and promote our values of liberty and free thought.  In addition, we must secure our borders, and that remains a top priority for me. I join in remembering those who lost their lives that September morning, and those who have made sacrifices since then in defense of our freedom.  Even though we have gone 5 years without a successful attack on our homeland, we must remain vigilant against the fanatics who find glory in death and destruction.  The War on Terror must be waged, and it must be won."
