STEARNS HOLDING HEARING WITH NEW ADMINISTRATOR OF NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC AND SAFETY ADMINISTRATION NICOLE NASON

SUBCOMMITTEE WILL REVIEW PROGRESS IN VEHICLE SAFETY AND FUEL EFFICIENCY


WASHINGTON, JULY 17, 2006 - "Last year, more than 43,000 Americans died in vehicle crashes," said Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL), Chairman of the Commerce, Trade & Consumer Protection Subcommittee.  "The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) sets and enforces vehicle safety standards, investigates safety defects, promotes safe driving technologies, and oversees Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ) standards.  I look forward to hearing from the NHTSA Administrator, the Honorable Nicole Nason, on the progress in making vehicle travel safer, on changing driver behavior, and what safety and fuel efficiency technologies hold the best promise for success."

The hearing entitled  "Motor Vehicle Technology and the Consumer: Views from the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration," will be held on Tuesday, July 18, 2006 at 2:00 P.M. in room 2322 RHOB.  The witness will be the Honorable Nicole Nason, NHTSA Administrator.
