STARK COMMEMORATES FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11 ATTACKS
Laments inaction on Commission recommendations

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Pete Stark (D-CA) today reflected on the fifth anniversary of the September 11th attacks:

"I join my friends on both sides of the aisle in mourning a national tragedy and honoring the courageous service of those who gave their lives to save others," said Stark. "The selflessness, sacrifice, and compassion many Americans demonstrated on and after 9/11 is a testament to our enduring strength as a people and as a nation."

"America is strongest when our leaders work together and eschew partisan politics in favor of common sense solutions," continued Stark. "But more than two years after the bipartisan 9/11 Commission issued a report on how best to protect America, an overwhelming majority of its recommendations have yet to be enacted. As a result, the Commission’s recent report card gave the Bush Administration and the Republican Congress a “D” for non-proliferation, an “F” for airline passenger pre-screening, and an a “D” for bag and cargo inspection."

"Rhetoric is no substitute for results. As we remember the tragic events of 9/11, we must recognize the lack of progress toward real security in the years that followed. Unfortunately, we are no more secure today than we were five years ago," concluded Stark.
