WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. Representative Pete Stark (D-CA), Ranking Democrat on the Ways and Means Health Subcommittee, today criticized wasteful spending by the Bush Administration and released a spoof of a Department of Health and Human Services’ advertisement in the February 13th edition of People magazine.
“The President should have established a simple and comprehensive drug benefit in Medicare,” Stark said. “Instead, his administration unnecessarily spent nearly $500,000 encouraging family members to send Valentine's cards to loved ones offering to try to help them understand a complex prescription drug program.”
“HHS’ advertisement is but the latest example of wasteful spending by an administration more interested in public relations than sound public policy,” Stark continued. “But no amount of money will successfully sell Republicans’ multi-billion dollar giveaway to the pharmaceutical and HMO industries as a real Medicare prescription drug benefit.”
