Visits Computer Sciences Corporation; One of the World's Largest Independent Computer Services Firms

LANHAM, MD - Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-MD) today visited the Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) and spoke with their more than 300 staff members about how their innovative technological advances have led to important federal partnerships and how the work they are doing contributes to a better Prince George's County.
"I wanted to take this opportunity to meet the employees of CSC and its PRIME Alliance partners because I think you are an example of the dynamic, innovative workforce that is so crucial to a vibrant Prince George's County," said Congressman Hoyer today. "CSC has made Prince George's County a more modern, technologically advanced, and attractive destination for the best and brightest minds."
One of CSC's first major contracts was with the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, supporting a computer system that collected telemetry data from unmanned lunar and interplanetary probes. Only three years later, the company competed successfully against such corporate giants as IBM and Univac to win a much larger contract with NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.
"We appreciate Representative Hoyer taking the time to visit our facility and meet with our staff," said Jim Sheaffer, general manager of CSC's PRIME Alliance program. "We are grateful for his continued interest and support for our work on the IRS's business system modernization program."
With a goal of transforming the IRS into a modern financial services organization, the IRS's Business Systems Modernization (BSM) project is the largest and most complex IT and business transformation effort ever undertaken. CSC, as the prime integrator of the project, leads an alliance of contractors that has worked with the IRS to deploy a number of new capabilities providing significant benefits to U.S. taxpayers.
"CSC has been a partner with the federal government helping the Departments of Treasury and Defense and NASA with many of government's biggest projects. Certainly, the IRS business modernization effort has been one of the most recent and important projects," Hoyer added.
"Since we passed the 1998 IRS restructuring and reform act and during my tenure as ranking member of the Treasury-Postal Appropriations Subcommittee, we have invested over a billion dollars in business systems modernization and the result has been major increases in the number of taxpayers filing on-line and a significant increase in customer satisfaction.
"Those successes are largely due to your hard work and the expertise you bring to bear on making our tax system fair and efficient.
"I'm always in awe of the great accomplishments, discoveries, and major projects that are produced by Maryland's high tech industry, and that includes the work here at CSC. We will need CSC's innovation and ingenuity to promote and protect this regions unique position of being home to some of the most important federal agencies and contractors.
"With the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, the FDA Food and Safety Laboratory in College Park, the Veterinary Medicine Center in Beltsville, the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, the ATF Laboratory in Beltsville, this region lays claim to some of the finest researchers, academicians, and scientists in the world. I look forward to continuing to partner with CSC to support their efforts to provide a growing number of jobs in Prince George's County and strongly support our state's economy," concluded Congressman Hoyer.
