Hoyer Encourages Students to Consider Attending One of the U.S. Service Academies

Application Process Open To Residents of the 5th Congressional District Deadline October 12

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Thursday, September 09, 2004

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Hoyer (D-MD) released the following announcement encouraging students to consider attending one of the U.S. Service Academies.

Are you interested in attending one of the nation's elite institutions on a full scholarship? Congressman Hoyer can assist you. Every year he nominates outstanding candidates for admission into one of four United States service academies: The U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York (Army), the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York.

When considering what path to take after high school, many young people overlook the opportunity of attending one of the U.S. Military Academies. These highly competitive institutions provide a top-notch education. In addition to teaching the leadership, discipline and communication skills necessary to be an officer in our nation's military, these institutions teach skills that are invaluable in today's job market. Graduation from the U.S. Military, Air Force, Naval, and Merchant Marine Academies ensures a successful future for today's young men and women, both for those who pursue a career in the military and for those who enter the job market after fulfilling their obligations. The academies provide a tremendous opportunity for a free education, but they also mold people into leaders.

In order to pursue appointment to one of these prestigious schools, students between the ages of 17 and 22 must be nominated. To begin the nomination process, students should contact Congressman Hoyer's Northern District Office to obtain the application packet. Students should write to Congressman Hoyer at 6500 Cherrywood Lane, Suite 310, Greenbelt, Maryland 20770 to let him know of their interest in a nomination between April and August. Congressman Hoyer's deadline for receipt of all packet materials this year is October 12th.

If you have any additional questions about the application process, or the Service Academy and Military Career Forum, please contact Ms. Betty Rogers in Congressman Hoyer's Greenbelt Office at (301) 474-0119, Monday through Friday.
