SKELTON: BATTLE FOR BAGHDAD IS DEFINING BATTLE FOR IRAQ
The ongoing battle for Baghdad is the defining battle for Iraq.
The outcome of the fight against the insurgents and sectarian fighters will determine the measure of American and Iraqi military success. Should the American and Iraqi forces prevail, the Maliki Iraqi Government will remain viable and stand a strong chance to survive. Should the insurgents and militias prevail, the tide will turn and progress toward a stable democratic government will be stopped in its tracks.
The battle for Baghdad is the defining battle in the war for the future of Iraq, very much like the Battle of Midway was the turning point for the American forces in the Pacific in 1942. By December 14, 2006, this war in Iraq will have lasted longer than American involvement in World War II. It is up to the Iraqi government and the Iraqi forces and their will to win as to whether there is a solid future for the Maliki government.
America has given so very much in the way of treasure and troops. The Iraqi government and forces must realize it is up to them now to sink or swim.
