ALLARD REQUESTS NIH SECOND OPINION FOR ARCHITECT OF THE CAPITOL TUNNEL WORKERS
October 20th, 2006 - WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard (R-Colo.), Chairman of the Legislative Branch Appropriations Subcommittee, officially requested that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) offer its expertise to assess the medical conditions of the Architect of the Capitol (AOC) tunnel workers.
“It’s clear that the AOC tunnel crew still has concerns about the health assessment provided to them regarding asbestos exposure through the Attending Physician’s office,” said Allard. “Because these workers were not required to wear personal protective equipment prior to this year, I believe that a second medical opinion should be provided to these employees if they so choose.”
The written request was forwarded to the Director of NIH, Dr. Elias Zerhouni, earlier today. In the letter, Allard asks the NIH to assist in providing a full pulmonary evaluation to the AOC tunnel employees who believe their health has been adversely affected from asbestoses exposure. Allard expects that the AOC will cover the costs associated with the tests.
