The Ninth district holds many proud Americans who have served their country bravely and unselfishly. These troops have placed the American flag at the crux of the defining moments in our history, from the beaches at Normandy to streets of Baghdad. All our veterans, including our soldiers who are now on the front lines of our War on Terror and will one day become veterans, need to be assured they will be supported through our VA programs.

In 2003, Congress and President Bush came to a historic agreement to address “Concurrent Receipt”, the inequity where disabled veterans’ retirement benefits are offset by the amount of disability coverage for which they are eligible. Under the agreement, all retirees with a 50 percent or greater disability rating from the VA will see the current offsetting reduction in their military retired pay phased out over a 10-year period. While it is not perfect, it is the first step toward addressing this problem in over 100 years.
