SHIMKUS ANNOUNCES LOCAL PROJECTS IN APPROPS. BILL

Washington, DC…..Congressman John Shimkus (R, Illinois-19) is pleased to announce
that several projects of benefit to the 19th District were funded in the Energy and
Water Appropriations Act passed by the U.S. House May 24. These projects must
still be approved by the Senate and signed into law before the funds are available.

Two projects specifically asked for by Shimkus that were included in the bill are:
1) $200,000 for the Southeast Illinois Shoreline Project along the Ohio River. The
funds will be used to repair and rehabilitate six former Corps of Engineers projects
used to provide flood protection to the communities of Reevesville, Brookport,
Golconda, Rosiclare, Shawneetown, and Harrisburg.
2) $200,000 (above the normal appropriation) for the Kaskaskia River Lock and Dam
for improvements to navigation in the channel and at the lock and dam.

Additional projects in the bill that Shimkus supported include:
+ $110 million for the Olmstead Lock and Dam construction on the Ohio River;
+ $3.9 million for Mississippi River Lock 24 rehabilitation;
+ $3.4 million for Mississippi River Lock 27 rehabilitation; and
+ $500,000 for the Upper Mississippi comprehensive plan.

The Energy and Water bill funds the U.S. Department of Energy programs, including
$54 million in this fiscal year 2007 appropriations bill for FutureGen. In addition $10
million was appropriated for the Clean Cities program; of that, $8 million is for
E-85 infrastructure. The Corps of Engineers is also funded in this bill.
