Bridgeport Public School System Wins $476,753 Smaller Learning Community Grant

Washington, D.C. –The Bridgeport Public School System was selected for a five-year $476,753 Smaller Learning Community (SLC) Program grant, Congressman Christopher Shays announced today.

“This Department of Education support will fund Bassick High School’s career Academies,” Shays explained. “This is a great program to help make sure students get the attention they need to succeed.”

“As someone who spent 25 years as an educator, I know first hand how effective working with students in small groups is and how important personalized attention is to supporting our children,” stated Bridgeport Mayor John M. Fabrizi. “I want to thank Congressman Shays and our entire federal delegation for securing nearly half a million dollars for Bridgeport high school students.”

“This Small Learning Communities Grant will allow us to continue our school restructuring efforts to create a more personalized learning experience for each of our students by creating Career Academies,” said Bassick High School Principal Ronald P. Remy. “Further, we will implement a strong, focused program of professional development to ensure that every student in the school is able to attain high levels of achievement and to graduate college ready.”

The funding will support a whole-school restructuring effort to develop an Achievement and Career Academies within the Bassick High School.

These Academies will create smaller, more personalized communities of learners; personalize the educational experience for each student; and provide needed support for increased levels of academic achievement. The program will integrate reading and mathematics instruction in all Academies, and across curriculum areas.

The School plans to implement a strong, focused program of professional development, based on empirical research, to ensure that every student in the school is able to perform at grade level in reading and mathematics by the end of grade ten.

The purpose of the SLC program is to promote academic achievement through the creation or expansion of small, safe, and successful learning environments in large public high schools to help ensure that all students graduate with the knowledge and skills necessary to make successful transitions to college and careers.
