Academy Nominations

I am always honored to nominate deserving young men and women from the 8th Congressional District in Virginia to our service academies.

If you are interested in attending a service academy it is to your benefit to begin the application process in your junior year. This begins by your writing a letter informing me that you would like to be nominated to a service academy. Please specify which academy and if you are interested in more than one there is no need to send a separate letter for each academy.

Students may apply for nomination to one or more of the following academies.  Please find listed below, the addresses, telephone numbers, and web pages of the service academies. Students may want to request a catalog. I hope you share this information regarding these wonderful education and service academies with America's future leaders.

Coast Guard Academy

U.S. Coast Guard Academy:

The U.S. Coast Guard does not require Congressional nominations. I have included this link for your information

The service academies search for candidates with extraordinary academic, physical, and leadership skills. Regrettably, even a Congressional Nomination does not guarantee admission.

Candidates must be United States citizens, reside in the 8th Congressional District of Virginia (Alexandria, Arlington, Falls Church City, and Parts of Fairfax County), and be at least 17 years of age by July 1st of the year in which they will begin their academy. Candidates may contact Bryan Spoon in my Reston office by phone at (703) 481-4339 or email bryan.spoon@mail.house.gov to request more information about obtaining a nomination.

If I can be of further assistance, please let me know.

Internships

Internships are a wonderful opportunity to gain first hand knowledge of Capitol Hill and the legislative process. Internships are unpaid and offered on a full or part-time basis and are available for high school and undergraduate students.  Work hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

While an intern, you will be able to serve in many different capacities and learn how the House of Representatives operates. Some of the activities you may find yourself involved with include:

  • answering telephones;
  • attending committee hearings;
  • working on special projects;
  • researching legislation;
  • general office duties.

If you are interested in becoming an intern you may fill out this  application and fax it to 202-225-0017. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Roberto Valencia in my Capitol Hill office at 202-225-4376 or at  roberto.valencia@mail.house.gov

Deadline for Summer 2006 Internships:  March 23, 2007.

The Congressional Page Program

The House Page Program is an opportunity for high school students to serve their country and learn about the legislative process. Pages are sponsored by a Member of Congress and work as a team with other pages on the House floor. The Page Program is administered by the Office of the Clerk.

Pages are high school juniors who must be sixteen years of age with at least a 3.0 GPA. Pages who serve during the school year attend the House Page School. Pages live at the Page Residence Hall and are supervised by full-time, round-the-clock staff.  The summer page program is divided between a two-month and a one-month appointment.

Unfortunately, due to limited space for Democratic office nominations, I am unable to nominate anyone to the Page Program at this time.

Also, I am only able to offer this program to constituents from the Eighth District of Virginia. Individuals from other parts of the United States should contact their Representative or Senator.
