Washington, D.C., September 6th – Congressman Jim Moran, Virginia Democrat, announced today that ArlingtonCounty will receive $876,084 in BRAC related economic assistance. The funding will help ease the closure and realignment of Department of Defense leased locations in ArlingtonCounty.
“ArlingtonCounty bore the brunt of last year’s poorly planned BRAC decisions,” said Moran. “I plan to work to extend the deadline for the transfer of jobs from Arlington to FortBelvoir, so that transportation concerns around the Fort can be tackled in an appropriate manner. In the meantime, this funding is a first installment of the significant financial support Arlington must receive in order to absorb the cost of the job transfers.”
Last year’s Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) recommendations called for the vacating of four million square feet of office space in Northern Virginia, (approximately 3.8 million of which resides in Arlington) currently occupied by roughly 21,000 defense employees. The BRAC plan is for the affected agencies to backfill current military bases in different parts of the country. FortBelvoir is set to gain 22,000 new personnel through BRAC. Under current law, the BRAC moves must be completed by 2011.
The Department of Defense Office of Economic Adjustment (OEA) released the initial community adjustment assistance grant of $876,084 to ArlingtonCounty.
