This region has long suffered some of the worst traffic congestion in this nation. While many of the remedies are long-term and not without controversy, there are a number of options we can work on that collectively will reduce congestion and improve our quality of life. I hope that you will find this page a helpful resource in on transportation issues.

Federal Update

I have been pleased to work over the past several years with the Northern Virginia congressional delegation to set some of state's transportation agenda and secure federal funds for priority projects here in Northern Virginia. This effort has resulted in a doubling the amount of federal transportation programs authorized under the Transportation Equity Act of the 21st Century (TEA-21). Virginia now receives almost $700 million annually in federal transportation assistance. Over and above Virginia’s share of federal transportation funds, I have also worked to secure funding for the following priority projects of direct interest to Northern Virginia:

  • a federal contribution of $1.5 billion to replace the Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge and improve the intersections with Route 1 and Telegraph Road.
  • a $100 per month transit benefit for Washington area federal workers. Since this program began, it is credited with taking tens of thousands of automobiles off congested local roadways.
  • more than $25 million to improve the 14th Street Bridge and the ramps on to the George Washington Memorial Parkway.
  • $250,000 to begin a major transportation study along the Jefferson Davis - Route 1 Corridor between Crystal City and Potomac Yard to the Braddock Road Metrorail station. This study will review all transit options including a bus way, rapid bus, light rail, a new Metrorail station or Virginia Railway Express (VRE) station along this corridor.
  • $750,000 to identify innovative solutions to move traffic along Duke Street, a major east-west arterial in Alexandria. During peak traffic periods, Duke Street is almost dysfunctional with no turn lanes and outdated signage.
  • more than $1 million for Fairfax County to improve pedestrian access to the Joe Alexander/Springfield-Franconia Transportation Center and support the operations of the Springfield TAGS circulatory bus system.
  • more than $1.5 million to establish a bus shuttle service between down town Falls Church and the East and West Falls Church metro stations. The new service would use advanced low-emission diesel fuel buses.
  • $1 million to establish the Georgetown-Rosslyn Connection shuttle bus service across the Francis Scott Key Bridge.
  • $5 million to improve the Route 7/123 interchange in Fairfax.
  • more than $50 million for Metro stations improvements, security upgrades, new buses, and a bio-chem detection system.
  • close to $10 million for capital improvements at Virginia Rail Express, including new rail cars and improvements at the King Street, L'Enfant Plaza, and Union stations.
  • more than $100 million for complete environmental studies, design and construction work on the Dulles Bus Rapid Transit and Rail project.
