Rep. Scott & Others Continue Fight to Assist Ernesto Victims

(Washington D.C.)- Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott, (D-VA) held two meetings in the last week with Third Congressional District constituents and with federal, state and local authorities to address the needs of Richmond and Newport News residents who have been displaced by Tropical Storm Ernesto. Rep. Scott is planning a third meeting for people in the City of Hampton next week.

"Time is a critical factor for all parties concerned. It is so important that we keep everyone informed at all levels of all the steps taken to assist those hurt by this recent Tropical Storm,"said Representative Bobby Scott.

Steps are underway to remove water damaged building materials from residential property infrastructure in Newport News. Clean-up assessments and efforts are underway in Richmond. At the request of Governor Tim Kaine, Congressman Scott and other members of the Virginia congressional delegation have sent a letter to the White House urging President Bush to give Virginia a federal disaster declaration.

"VDEM is working closely with local governments and Virginia's congressional delegation to pursue federal assistance for the damage caused by Ernesto," said Michael Cline, state coordinator for the Virginia Department of Emergency Management.

The Hampton meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 18, 2006, at the Francis Mallory Elementary School, 331 Big Bethel Road, Hampton, VA 23666. The public is invited to attend.
