Bipartisan Legislation to Protect Steens Mountain

October 30, 2000: In a signing ceremony with Sen. Wyden, President Clinton signs Public Law 106-399, the Steens Mountain Cooperative Management and Protection Act, (H.R. 4828), adding nearly 175,000 acres to Oregon's protected wilderness lands. The Senate had passed H.R. 4828, after extensive negotiations, on 10/23/00. The new law designated wilderness areas and a cooperative management and protection area in the vicinity of Steens Mountain in Harney County, Oregon. Wyden was a co-author of the bill, along with the rest of Oregon delegation. It was one of the few wilderness measures to pass Congress in 2000.
