Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi spoke today at the National Commemoration of the Days of Remembrance luncheon in the Capitol. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II and the liberation of the survivors of the Holocaust from Nazi concentration camps. Below are Pelosi’s remarks:

“This is an incredible day for our country. Every year we come together under the Capitol dome, to remember. I think it’s fitting that we’re meeting here, just steps from the Capitol Rotunda, just as it’s fitting that we have a museum to the Holocaust just off the National Mall. The Holocaust is part of the American experience, and the need to remember is an obligation that goes far beyond one war, or one nation, or one century.

“The opportunity to hear from the survivors is a privilege. Their experiences are part of our history and telling their story continues to strengthen our nation and our future.

“It is hard to imagine that the Holocaust ever happened. We are respectful of those who lived through it, sad for those who did not, and transformed by the horror of it all. We must never forget, because only in remembering can we make the journey from horror to hope.

“So thank you again. Your commitment to support and sustain the Holocaust Museum makes possible America’s commitment to learn its lessons and to teach its truths. We hope that those lessons will allow us and our children to help build a world more free of hatred, and more filled with love, compassion, and understanding among peoples.”
