Rep. Ryan Response to President's State of the Union Address

WASHINGTON – Wisconsin's First District Congressman Paul Ryan made the following statement regarding the President's State of the Union address this evening:

"I was impressed with the President’s commitment to confronting the tough issues and problems facing our nation. We need to tackle key challenges such as growing our economy faster and creating jobs, addressing Medicare’s shortcomings, and defending our country against terrorists and other threats. The President is clearly ready to take on these challenges. I’m looking forward to working with him and my colleagues in Congress on these priorities in the months ahead."

"We cannot ignore our responsibility to fix these problems now. Passing the buck to our children is not an acceptable option."

"Our economy and Wisconsin families need the boost that speeding up the tax relief would give. Our seniors need better choices for health care and prescription drug coverage. Social Security needs to be strengthened before the baby boom generation begins to retire, and rising health care costs also demand immediate action. At the same time, our security concerns require constant vigilance. When rogue nations such as Iraq continue to conceal weapons of mass destruction, we cannot afford to ignore the threat that poses to our country."

"I share the President’s faith in Americans’ ability to work together to overcome these obstacles, help each other along the way, and strengthen our nation for the long term."
