RYAN SUPPORTS DEFENSE BILL THAT PROTECTS MILITARY READINESS

WASHINGTON – First District Congressman Paul Ryan today voted in favor of legislation that provides funding to improve the quality of life for those serving in our armed forces, heighten readiness, and modernize Defense programs. This legislation – the conference report for the Defense Authorization Act (H.R. 4205) – passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 382-31.

"This bill will make a real difference for U.S. servicemen and women. It helps close the gap between civilian and military pay by granting a 3.7 percent pay raise to servicemen. It also helps out with housing costs and honors our commitment to military retirees through improved health care benefits," Ryan said. "We owe the dedicated men and women who serve in our armed forces decent pay and sufficient resources to defend this nation effectively. They should not have to struggle on food stamps as they protect our freedom."

The Defense Authorization Act provides permanent lifetime TRICARE eligibility to Medicare-eligible military retirees and their family members. Under the plan, beneficiaries could keep their current Medicare provider and use TRICARE as their Medicare supplement. The bill also restores pharmacy access for all Medicare-eligible military retirees.

"Today's legislation also bolsters military readiness by providing funding in some critical areas," added Ryan. "For example, it includes funding for training and training range improvements, spare parts for aircraft squadrons, and depot maintenance. Overall, it adds $1 billion to critical readiness accounts. Congress has made improving military readiness and addressing shortfalls a priority, and this legislation is another important step in this direction."
