Miami, Florida --- Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen applauded the $5.1 Million grant that the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded to the Miami Beach Community Development Corporation (MBCDC) to build low income housing for the elderly.

The development of 36 new affordable housing rental apartments for the elderly will be located on 28^th Street, immediately west of Collins Avenue and adjacent to the Villa Maria Apartments. The MBCDC purchased the Villa Maria Apartments and is rehabilitating them to preserve 34 additional low income housing units.

Said Ros-Lehtinen, "These low income housing units will be a lifeline for our elderly community who has worked so hard during their years so that they may retire in a dignified manner. I am also pleased that we have already selected a building site and that work will begin in a few short months.

The need for affordable housing is one of the preeminent issues affecting South Florida and every unit that is built goes a long way in relieving this low income housing crunch."
