Improving Michigan's Roads

A thriving economy depends on quality transportation infrastructure to ensure that goods can be shipped from factories to retailers and from retailers to consumers.  As Co-chair of the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Caucus I am working to improve the flow of commerce in Michigan.   Intelligent transportation systems enhance productivity, save lives, time and money by managing traffic flows, reducing congestion and providing alternate routes to travelers.  That's why I secured $500 million in funding for ITS technology in the House-passed transportation bill.  The Transportation bill will also provide at least $6.4 billion for Michigan’s roads, helping to creating more than 50,000 jobs right here in Michigan.

The 8th District will see real benefits from new road construction and road repairs.  Some of the highlights include:

INGHAM County

$16.84 million for Michigan State University (MSU) Farm Lane underpass to correct dangerous railroad crossings that have experienced accidents, including  pedestrian fatalities and injuries.

$3.6 million for Capital Area Transportation Authority to fund replacement buses and bus-related Intelligence Transportation Systems.

LIVINGSTON County

$4.8 million to further development and construction of I-96 and Latson Road interchange;

$400,000 for Cleary University to move a roadway to make certain campus space safe;

$1.6 million for East Grand River Avenue between Old US 23 and Pleasant Valley to improve safety and relieve congestion.

OAKLAND County

 $3.2 million for Baldwin Road widening and reconstruction in Orion Township to move traffic on and off I-75 at the Baldwin interchange;

$960,000 for Cogshall Road in Holly/Rose Township to correct a dangerous problem in which an active railroad track crosses the only road accessing a predominately low-income and senior citizen housing area of approximately 350 residents.
