Hoyer Congratulates People of India on National Republic Day

Sends Letter to Ambassador of India

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Wednesday, January 26, 2005

WASHINGTON, DC – As a member of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian-Americans, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) today joined the Caucus in sending a letter to H.E. Ronen Sen, Ambassador of India to the United States, congratulating and extending warm wishes to the people of India on their National Republic Day observed today, January 26.

“January 26 is a day of celebration for the more than 1 billion citizens of India and I am pleased to offer my best wishes to Ambassador Sen and the Indian people on this celebratory day,” said Hoyer.

“In recent years U.S.-Indian relations have been guided by the mutual values upon which both of our nations were founded – respect for individual freedom, importance of civil society, respect for the rule of law, and a desire for peaceful inter-state relations.

“Following the devastating Tsunami that caused damage and heartache to so much of India and the other nations of Southeast Asia, the cooperation between our nations is a testament to our strengthened relations and I look forward to continuing to work together to provide humanitarian relief to those in need as quickly as possible,” Hoyer added.

Following is the full text of the letter.

Dear Ambassador Sen:

We write to take this opportunity to extend our most heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to you and the people of India on the 56th Republic Day.

Since attaining freedom more than half a century ago, India has grown to be the 2nd most populous nation and largest democracy in the world. It is the birthplace of major civilizations and religions, and has created a culture whose values have enriched societies throughout the world.

As members of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian-Americans, we have been privileged to witness and directly participate in the growing Indian-American bond. Our common goal of safeguarding liberty and combating terrorism has united our nations and stimulated a burgeoning relationship based on the many similarities and values that our cultures share.

Mr. Ambassador, as India and the other nations of South and Southeast Asia, resiliently emerge from a catastrophe of unprecedented scope, we are encouraged by the continued joint cooperation between our two peoples and nations. As the Navies of India and the United States continue to work together, providing relief to those who need it most, we see put into action the common humanitarian values shared by our two countries.

On this momentous and celebratory day, we once again congratulate the people of India on the National Republic Day and offer you our warmest wishes.
