Renzi Supports Legislation to Protect Minors

(WASHINGTON, D.C) - U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi (AZ-01) today joined his colleagues in passing S. 403, the Child Custody Protection Act, legislation that protects minors from being exploited or coerced into having an abortion.  The bill passed by a vote of 264-153.

“Under current law, children cannot have their ears pierced or accept medicine from a school nurse without parental permission, yet they can be transported across state lines by a person unknown to their parents and be influenced to have an abortion,” said Congressman Renzi.  “This legislation is about parental rights, about including parents in a decision that will alter their daughter’s life.”

The Child Custody Protection Act makes it a federal crime to transport a minor across state lines to have an abortion with the intent of evading parental consent or parental notification laws in the minor’s home state.  The bill also requires abortion providers in interstate abortions to provide notification of the minor’s decision to the minor’s parents or legal guardian 24 hours before the abortion is performed.

Each of these federal crimes will carry penalties of a $100,000 fine, or one year of jail, or both.}
