Garrett Votes for Three Bills Aimed at Ending the Genocide in Darfur

Washington, Sep 27 -  This week, Congressman Scott Garrett voted in favor of three bills, building on his strong record of supporting efforts to end the genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan. The first, the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act of 2006 (H.R. 3127), would amend the Comprehensive Peace in Sudan Act of 2004, directing the President to freeze the assets of and deny entrance visas to any individual deemed to be complicit in acts of genocide or war crimes in Darfur. The other two resolutions were H.Res. 992, which urged the President to appoint a Presidential Special Envoy for Sudan, and H.Res. 723, which called on the President to take immediate steps to help improve the security situation in Darfur, with emphasis on civilian protection.

“The Darfur Peace and Accountability Act of 2006 directs the President to take specific measures against those responsible for this travesty and tremendous loss of human life in Sudan,” said Garrett. “Over the last four years, more than 400,000 southern Sudanese Christians have been massacred and over 1.6 million people have been permanently displaced from their homes. The United States and all nations need to act to help end the atrocities that have been occurring in Darfur.”

“The two resolutions, also passed by the House, called on the President to give immediate attention to these human rights atrocities. As we—the United States and our allies--put pressure on those responsible for these crimes, and work to protect innocent civilians in Darfur, we are guided by the truth that life is important and worth saving.”
