Appointment to any of the four U.S. Service Academies - Air Force, Naval, Merchant Marine, or Military - begins with a nomination from one's Member of Congress.

To be considered for a nomination, candidates are encouraged to contact my district office in the spring of their junior year in high school.  Applications and files must be completed and turned into my office by October 31st, 2006 for the class entering in June of 2007.

In addition to the application form, a complete file must include the following:

High school transcript

Eye Exam (by doctor or school nurse)

College Board Scores (SAT code is 6230, ACT code is 7485)

Letters of Recommendation (at least 2, no more than 5)

List of extracurricular activities

One page essay: "Why I want to attend a Service Academy"

Photograph (a snapshot will do)

Only candidates whose files are complete by the deadline will be considered for nomination to an academy.  Eligible candidates must be a legal resident of the 3rd Congressional District of the State of Minnesota, at least 17 years of age, and may not reach their 23rd birthday on July 1st of the year of admission.  Each applicant must be a citizen of the United States, unmarried, and have no children.

My Service Academy Selection Board reviews all applicants with completed files.  The Board may choose to interview individual applicants and those selected for an interview will be contacted directly in December.  Recommendations to the academies will be made by the Board based on a competitive evaluation of all information.

Further information can be obtained through writing or calling my district office.
