A Tribute to Fallen Texans

Recently, the 200th Texan was killed in battle since the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. This page is a tribute to those with roots in or near Congressional District 2. May we never forget their great sacrifice given in the name of freedom.
LANCE CORPORAL RYAN ADAM MILLER

Ryan Miller, of Pearland, Texas, was a third generaton U.S. Marine. Lance Corporal Miller was killed by an IED on September 14, 2006.

STAFF SERGEANT BEN WILLIAMS

Ben Williams, of Orange, Texas, was killed on June 20 in Al Anbar, Iraq. He was a staff sergeant in the Marines and an infantry unit leader assigned to the First Battalion, First Marine Regiment, First Marine Division of the First Marine Expeditionary Force.

STAFF SERGEANT ALBERTO SANCHEZ, JR.

Alberto Sanchez, Jr., was a nine year Army veteran. A graduate of Milby High School in Houston, Texas, Staff Sergeant Sanchez was killed while on patrol in Balad, Iraq.

PRIVATE FIRST CLASS KRISTIAN MENCHACA

PFC Mechaca was born in Houston, Texas. He served in the 101st Airborne. While on patrol near Baghdad, PFC Menchaca and another soldier were kidnapped and later murdered by insurgents. PFC Menchaca was only 23 years of age.
TECHNICAL SERGEANT WALTER MOSS, JR

Native Houstonian, Walter Moss, Jr., was the 200th Texan to be killed in Iraq. A graduate of Aldine High School, he was killed while trying to defuse a makeshift bomb while conducting operations near Baghdad.

STAFF SERGEANT MICHAEL DURBIN

Staff Sergeant Durbin, from Spring, Texas, was serving his third tour in Iraq when a homemade bomb exploded, taking his life in January 2006. Staff Sergeant Durbin was a member of the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne Division.

LANCE CORPORAL ROBERT MARTINEZ

Lance Corporal Martinez, from Splendora, Texas, was a member of the Second Battalion, Seventh Marine Regiment, First Marine Division. He gave his life in the line of duty on December 1, 2005.

SERGEANT BILL MEEUWSEN

Sergeant Bill Meeuwsen, of Kingwood, Texas, gave his life in combat in November 2005. Sergeant Meeuwsen was a member of the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne Division.

PRIVATE FIRST CLASS WESLEY ROBERT RIGGS

Private First Class Wesley Robert Riggs of Beach City, TX, was killed during a patrol on May 17, 2005, near Tikrit, Iraq, when a roadside bomb exploded.

LANCE CORPORAL WESLEY JOEL CANNING

Lance Corporal Wesley Canning of Friendswood, TX, was killed in Al Anbar Province, Iraq, during the successful American offensive against the insurgent enemy in Fallujah. Canning, who was serving his second tour in Iraq, was just 21 years old.

LANCE CORPORAL FRED LEE MACIEL

Lance Corporal Fred Lee Maciel, of Spring, Texas, lost his life in a helicopter crash in Iraq in early 2005. Fred graduated from Spring High School and was a member of the 3rd Marine Division.

STAFF SERGEANT RUSSELL SLAY

Staff Sergeant Russell Slay, of the 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, was from Humble, Texas. The 100th Texas member of the Armed Forces to be killed in Iraq, Staff Sergreant Slay lost his life in combat in Fallujah.
