Statement by Congressman Scott Garrett On the Bergenfield Apartment Fire

Washington, Dec 14, 2005 -

Today, the world watched as a horrific fire ravaged an apartment building in Bergenfield, New Jersey. News broadcasts as far away as London and Pakistan carried pictures of the fire. The fire was touched off by a gas explosion early this morning. Ultimately, part of the three-story apartment building collapsed and about two dozen families are now left homeless.

Tragically, at last report at least three individuals lost their lives in this fire. But, the more than 500 police, fire, and rescue personnel on the scene were still searching through the rubble and debris for survivors. Others were being treated for injuries at three local hospitals. The loss of life and of loved ones, of home and of memories is simply not measurable, and tonight my family and I pray for all who have been touched by this terrible fire.

While our hearts are filled with sorrow for those families, our hearts are also filled with gratitude, admiration, and respect for the hundreds of men and women who spent the day battling the fire in sub-zero temperatures and caring for the victims of the blaze. Once again, our brave first responders answered the call without regard for their own safety or comfort. We are indeed a blessed community to be served by such people.

This is a time for the greater community of North Jersey and beyond to come together to give aid and comfort to these families and to the firefighters, police officers, and emergency medical personnel who are serving them. The Red Cross chapter for the Hudson-Bergen area is providing emergency housing and relief, and both the Borough of Bergenfield and the Bergenfield Fire Department have received countless calls and donations of money and other items.

If you are interested in offering assistance as well, please contact the Red Cross at 201-882-3705.
