Rep. Pitts cheers GSK purchase of old Wyeth site

Washington—Congressmen Joe Pitts (R, PA-16) welcomed news today that Glaxo Smith Kline (GSK) has acquired the 90-acre manufacturing site in Marietta once owned by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals.  GSK will use the site in the development of vaccines, particularly its seasonal and pandemic flu vaccines.

“This is wonderful news for Marietta and Lancaster County ,” said Congressman Pitts.  “GSK is an industry leader in the development of vaccines and medicines.  The company’s presence here will mean more jobs for residents of the area and will make Marietta the home of cutting edge research into the prevention and treatment of the flu.

“I have been honored to work with a number of people in anticipation of this announcement.  I have spoken personally with GSK executives in making the case for bringing their business here.  I have worked closely with Governor Rendell, Senators Santorum and Specter, our county commissioners, State Representative Dave Hickernell, State Senator Chip Brightbill, Dave Nikiloff President of the Economic Development Company, East Donegal Township leaders, and the Donegal Public School System in making the case that Marietta is the right place for GSK to locate its business.

“In the long run, GSK will be a valuable member of our community.  By bringing jobs and industry-leading research, the company will significantly enhance and diversify our area’s economy,” said Congressman Pitts.
