ABOUT WISCONSIN'S 6TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT
The 6th Congressional District of Wisconsin stretches from Lake Michigan in the east through Adams County in the west, and from
the southern border of Appleton in the north down to an area just south of Watertown, near the midpoint between Milwaukee and Madison.
The largest city is Oshkosh, with Beaver Dam, Fond du Lac, Manitowoc, Menasha, Neenah, Sheboygan and Watertown also serving as
major population centers. The numerous industrial concerns in the district employ highly-skilled workers. Farming has a strong presence.
Dairying operations dominate but corn, pea and bean production are also important.
Many factory towns and businesses are located in the district, including companies such as Oshkosh B'Gosh clothing and Kimberly-Clark
paper products. Oshkosh Truck is the largest defense contractor in the state. The twin cities of Neenah and Menasha are a paper-making
and printing center.
Manitowoc County has many jobs in manufacturing and processing, including Fisher-Hamilton in Two Rivers, which is the world's largest
manufacturer of laboratory furniture and fume hoods. The S.S. Badger, operated by Lake Michigan Carferry, transports 140,000 people each
year across Lake Michigan between Manitowoc and Ludington, Michigan.
At the southern tip of Lake Winnebago, the largest in Wisconsin, is Fond du Lac County, home of Mercury Marine outboard motors. Just
west of Sheboygan is the Kohler Company, a leading manufacturer of plumbing and power systems products. Also near Sheboygan is the
Johnsonville Sausage Company which markets sausage products worldwide.
Quadgraphics in Lomira is a leader in the printing industry, the Michels Corporation in Brownsville specializes in underground utilities,
Mayville is home to numerous machining companies with international clients, and John Deere in Horicon manufactures lawn
and garden equipment.
Each year the Experimental Aircraft Association convention is held in Oshkosh, making the city airport one of the world's busiest during
the event in terms of takeoffs and landings.
Twenty miles west of Fond du Lac is the City of Ripon, home of the Little White Schoolhouse known as the birthplace of the Republican
Party. In 1854 a group met in the schoolhouse and proclaimed themselves Republicans.
