San Francisco, CA. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement regarding the San Francisco Unified School District’s Victory Against Hunger Award from the Congressional Hunger Center.

“Today, I am proud to recognize the San Francisco Unified School District as it accepts the Victory Against Hunger Award for its innovative Grab n Go breakfast program at Balboa High School. Over the years, the remarkable efforts of the school district have increased access to healthy, nutritious food for all students, making it a model for the nation in the fight against hunger.

“The San Francisco Unified School District has been ahead of the nationwide curve in its implementation of wellness policy to improve student nutrition. In January 2003, the San Francisco Board of Education voted to remove soda and junk food from all district schools in response to soaring childhood obesity and related disorders such as asthma, heart disease, high blood pressure, and Type 2 diabetes. The school district's comprehensive and thoughtful wellness policy seeks to ensure that all food sold or served to students is high in vitamins, minerals, proteins, and fiber, and not just lower in calories.

“Innovative pilot programs such as Grab n Go, the removal of soda and junk food from every district campus, higher than average standards for all food served to students, and an increased awareness among administrators are all strategies that have ensured that more students eat healthy school meals. Better nutrition resulting from these efforts has had a positive effect on the academic achievement of those students, and on their long-term health. Clearly, the wellness policy of the San Francisco Unified School District, and in particular the Grab n Go breakfast program at Balboa High School, is worthy of the Victory Against Hunger Award being presented today.

“I also want to thank the Congressional Hunger Center for recognizing San Francisco Unified School District's novel and effective efforts to improve student health and for honoring their success in setting an outstanding example for school districts nationwide.”
