Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi announced today the release of a $1 million grant to design the replacement for Doyle Drive, which provides access from San Francisco to the Golden Gate Bridge.

“As the access road to the Golden Gate Bridge, Doyle Drive is an essential link between San Francisco and the regions to the north. But the current roadway is outmoded and unsafe,” Pelosi said. “It’s time to replace Doyle Drive with a new parkway that will be safer and seismically stronger and will provide better access to the Presidio.”

Doyle Drive, an elevated highway built in 1936, is seriously deteriorated and vulnerable to earthquakes. The lack of a median barrier has led to numerous injuries and deaths in head-on collisions and other accidents.

The Presidio Parkway plan will replace this dangerous, crumbling eyesore with a beautifully landscaped parkway that will ensure access to the Golden Gate Bridge and points north. The new road will also improve access to the Presidio and Golden Gate National Recreation Area, benefiting the millions of visitors who use these parks every year.

City, state, and federal agencies, along with community groups, have worked together to come up with a new plan for Doyle Drive. This funding, obtained by Pelosi in the fiscal year 2006 transportation appropriations bill, will help underwrite the costs of the detailed design of the new parkway. Pelosi also secured $8 million for Doyle Drive in the six-year highway-transit reauthorization bill.
