Washington, D.C.—House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in observance of the 36th annual Earth Day, which will be celebrated tomorrow:

“On Earth Day, we recognize that a healthy environment is critical to everyone – especially our children – and rededicate ourselves to working for clean air, clean water, and protection for our nation’s natural wonders.

“Instead of protecting the environment for all Americans, the Bush Administration has favored special interests that profit when environmental laws are weakened. Above all, President Bush has favored the energy industry, attacking environmental laws whenever they interfere with corporate profits. He has even appointed energy industry cronies to key government positions from which they can roll back environmental and public health protections. It is clear that President Bush is governing for the wealthy few, not for all Americans.

“As Americans face record prices at the pump, and oil companies receive record giveaways and make record profits, we are reminded of the need for a 21st century energy policy – one that will move our country forward while protecting our environment. Democrats are committed to achieving energy independence by the year 2020.

“On this Earth Day, and every day, let us pledge to our children, and our children’s children, that they will have clean air to breathe, clean water to drink, and the opportunity to experience the wonders of nature.”
