Mack: Chavez Speech Shows World Why Venezuela Should Be Blocked From Security Council

“Quite simply, Chavez’s anti-freedom tirade at the United Nations only bolstered the fact that he is little more than a champion of despair and despotism and a sworn enemy of hope and opportunity.”

September 20, 2006 -

Washington – Congressman Connie Mack (FL-14), a member of the House International Relations Committee, today blasted Hugo Chavez for comparing the United States to a terrorist state during the Venezuelan leader’s speech to the United Nations, and called on the world body to block Chavez from joining the Security Council.

Mack said:

“In his speech today at the United Nations, Hugo Chavez once again showed the world his true colors.

“Quite simply, Chavez’s anti-freedom tirade at the United Nations only bolstered the fact that he is little more than a champion of despair and despotism and a sworn enemy of hope and opportunity.

“Hugo Chavez’s growing alliance with proven enemies of freedom including Iran, Syria, Cuba and North Korea, coupled by his rapid militarization, pursuit of nuclear technologies and relentless broadside attacks on freedom in Venezuela, pose a real threat to the stability of the Western Hemisphere and indeed the world.

“As the world reflects on Hugo Chavez’s speech at the United Nations, and his rogue behavior in a world seeking freedom, security, prosperity, the United Nations must reject any effort by Venezuela to join the Security Council.”
