About the Sixth District of New Jersey
The Sixth District of New Jersey covers most of Middlesex County and a good portion of Monmouth County, including the Bayshore and 16 communities on the Atlantic Ocean. It also encompasses small portions of Somerset and Union counties.
While the district is predominantly suburban in character, the cities of New Brunswick, Asbury Park, Long Branch, and Plainfield are key urban centers. The beautiful coastal areas attract many summer visitors, making tourism a major component of the regional economy.
This Central Jersey area is on the cutting edge of communications and other high technology research and development. Contributing to this growth is the substantial U.S. Department of Defense presence at Fort Monmouth, Camp Kilmer and Naval Weapons Station Earle.
The District is home to Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Monmouth University, Middlesex and Brookdale community colleges. Outstanding educational institutions combined with the presence of major pharmaceutical companies make the area a center for major scientific and medical research.
