Norton to Try and Raise Spirits of D.C. National Guard off to Iraq
Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.), a strong opponent of the Iraq war and an avid advocate for the D.C. National Guard, visited with D.C. National Guard troops headed to Iraq on Monday, July 31, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at the D.C. Armory, 2001 East Capitol Street, SE. President Bush last week said more troops will be sent to Iraq. "Our D.C. Guard troops are going to Iraq again, some for the second or third time. The "week-end" warrior nickname passed into history as the Administration has used Guards as regular Army troops, earlier topping 40% in Iraq. Our Guard members - D.C. and federal government employees, small business owners, students, teachers, hotel and restaurant workers, police officers, firefighters and computer technicians - hold all the same jobs as others in our city. Their financial, career, and family sacrifices during the largest Guard call up since World War II, is one of the most important moving untold stories of this war. It will be a privilege to say a few words to our National Guard members as they head to Iraq during this very troubled period there."
