Owens Brings in Over One Million in Major Transportation Projects for Court & Smith Streets and Gowanus Tunnel Study

Brooklyn, NY - Congressman Major Owens announced today (August 15) that through his efforts two vitally important transportation projects in the downtown section of his district (11th CD) have been awarded funds from the Department of Transportation for reconstruction, road safety programs and to seek out transportation alternatives under the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21).

"The Court and Smith Streets areas of Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens and Brooklyn Heights have been so thoroughly revitalized that pedestrian traffic has exploded.  I earmarked projects that fit well into Community Board 6 master plan for the area that would improve public safety and bring needed infrastructure renovation to enhance quality of life," Owens said.  Court and Smith streets renovation received $640,000.

The Congressman Owens further announced that the Gowanus Project Stakeholder Group received $400,000 to study a Gowanus Tunnel as a desirable alternative to the current Gowanus Expressway.  "A Gowanus Tunnel provides a safe and sensible option for the community and access to a re-born waterfront," Owens said.
