Biography of Marilyn Musgrave

On November 5, 2002, Marilyn Musgrave was elected to represent Colorado’s Fourth District in the United States Congress. Serving her second term, Musgrave sits on the House Committees on Agriculture, Small Business, Resources, and Education and the Workforce. She is Chairman of the Small Business Subcommittee on the Workforce, Empowerment and Government Programs. In addition, at the start of her second term, Musgrave was elected by her peers in five western states as the Region Two representative for the influential Republican Steering Committee, which is chaired by Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert.

She is a member of Republican Study Committee, a group of nearly 100 that is dedicated to advancing the Constitutional principles of fiscal responsibility, a strong national defense, and limited government. As a freshman, Musgrave founded the Congressional Second Amendment Caucus. In her second term, she was selected as the Policy Chair for the Western Caucus. Musgrave is also a member the Values Action Team and Washington Waste Watchers.

In her first session, Musgrave stood out from her colleagues when Newsweek selected her as the ‘Rising Star’ within the House and National Journal referenced her as one of two freshman congressmen to watch.

Refusing to take the backbench, Marilyn Musgrave first drew the national spotlight within months of entering Congress by standing up to leaders within her own party and leading the fight against the federal gas tax hike.

In 1990, after volunteering for several local Republican campaigns and working to improve public education, Musgrave won her first election to the Morgan County School Board. Serving on the board for two years, she decided to campaign for the Colorado House of Representatives. Musgrave was elected and served four years as a state Representative. In 1998, Musgrave was elected to the state Senate, winning 63% of the vote. While serving, she received a vote of confidence from her colleagues and was elected the Senate Republican Caucus Chairman.

Congresswoman Musgrave is a proven leader who has continued the record she began in the state legislature and the school board. She fights for family values, to cut burdensome taxes, promote fiscal discipline, improve education, support agricultural, defend the Second Amendment right to possess firearms, and support men and women serving in the military. Musgrave has always supported the principles of smaller, leaner government and will ensure the freedoms of Coloradans are defended in Washington, D.C.

A native of Colorado, Musgrave grew up in rural Weld County and graduated from
Eaton High School. She married Steve Musgrave while attending Colorado State University, where they both worked their way through college. After graduation, Marilyn taught school in Eastern Colorado. The Musgrave family has operated an agricultural business for over twenty years.
