FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FORMER CAMP KIRBY PROPERTY TO BE ADDED TO WILLIARD BROOK STATE FOREST

WASHINGTON, D.C. Today, Congressman John W. Olver (D -1st District) and Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA) announced that the Commonwealth of Massachusetts will receive a $1 million Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) grant to assist in the acquisition of the 75+ acre former Camp Kirby property in the towns of Ashby and Townsend.

The former Camp Kirby property will be added to Willard Brook State Forest and managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation for passive recreation. The property is also adjacent to Pearl Hill State Park and is located within the Sqannassit Area of Critical Environmental Concern and within a wellhead protection zone for two public water supplies.

"LWCF support will allow the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation to protect this land from development, add 75+ acres to an existing state forest, and increase public recreation opportunities," Congressman John Olver said. "This project will help us to preserve what is special about our area," he added.

"Protecting the natural beauty of Massachusetts is enormously important, and we're grateful for this funding which will make a great contribution to the Willard Brook State Forest," Kennedy said.

The Land and Water Conservation Fund is a partnership program that provides matching funds to states and communities for acquisition, development, and conservation of parks and open space. The program is administered by the National Park Service in partnership with state governments.
