OLVER ANNOUNCES $1.99 MILLION FOR BERKSHIRE COMMUNITY COLLEGE

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. Representatives John W. Olver (D-1st District) announced today that Berkshire Community College (BCC) has been awarded a US Department of Education Strengthening Institutions Grant. BCC will receive $399,971 a year for five years to develop a Center for Teaching, Learning and Technology along with a reading/writing laboratory to strengthen its developmental education program.

"BCC is a gem for students in the County, and the College certainly deserves this largest federal grant in its forty-six year history," Olver said. "The funds will be a big boost to the College's mission. For many they may mean the difference between earning a high-quality degree or not."

The grant will enable BCC to develop a Center for Teaching, Learning and Technology along with a reading/writing laboratory to strengthen its developmental education program; link developmental education to general education college courses; provide faculty/staff professional development; and incorporate technology into the curriculum. Developmental education programs provide extra assistance to "at-risk" students. As a result of strengthening the developmental education program, BCC anticipates student retention and graduation numbers will increase.

The Department of Education Strengthening Institutions grant program helps eligible institutions of higher education expand their capacity to serve low-income students by providing funds to improve and strengthen academic quality, institutional management, and fiscal stability.

"This grant will bring about dramatic changes at BCC that will affect the college and our students for years to come," said Dr. Paul Raverta, president of Berkshire Community College. "Basically, the grant provides BCC with the resources needed to develop new teaching and learning methods that will put the college on the cutting edge of education for the 21st Century."

Berkshire Community College (BCC) was founded in 1960 as the state's first community college. Berkshire County has 131,868 residents in its 931 square miles, and BCC serves over 2,000 students a semester.
