Berkshire Projects |
Western and north central Massachusetts communities often don't have enough local or state-supplied funds to finance critical local transportation, health care, education, crime prevention, environmental protection, recreation, cultural or historic preservation projects.
A position on the House Appropriations Committee can help. Since my appointment to that Committee, I've worked closely with local leaders and planners to boost economic development spending in communities all over the First Congressional District.
Here is a list of economic development initiatives in Berkshire County that have been funded or partially funded by the federal government at my request. Unless otherwise indicated, funding was included in one of the annual appropriations bills:
- $900,000 for invasive plant species removal and ecosystem restoration in the Berkshire Taconic mountains.
- $500,000 for land conservation at the YMCA's Camp Hi Rock in Mount Washington.
- $250,000 for restoration of the Mahaiwe Theater in Stockbridge.
- $325,000 for construction of the South Berkshire Community Center.
- $575,000 for installation of a climate control system at the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield.
- $510,000 for an incumbent worker training program administered by the Berkshire Applied Technology Council.
- $322,500 for building renovations to Girls Inc. in Pittsfield.
- $300,000 for the Christian Center in Pittsfield's Up Reach Center.
- $400,000 for sustainable energy programs administered by the Center for Ecological Development (CET) in Pittsfield.
- $500,000 for Project Horizons training and employment program in Berkshire County.
- $3 million for the Ashuwillticook bike trail in Berkshire County. (Funding secured in TEA-21 transportation authorizing legislation.)
- $400,000 to Job Access Transit Services to establish the Transportation Association of North Berkshire.
- $1.5 million for safety improvements to the Pittsfield Airport and Harriman-West Airport in North Adams.
- $8.8 million for construction of the Pittsfield Intermodal Transportation Center.
- $1.5 million to study Pittsfield traffic patterns and improve existing roadways handling north-south traffic through Pittsfield. (Funding secured in TEA-21 transportation authorizing legislation.)
- $2 million for scenic improvements and safety enhancements to Mohawk Trail (Route 2) and the Jacobs Ladder Trail (Route 20) in between the Pioneer Valley and Berkshire County.
- $1.5 million for reconstruction of Spring Street in Williamstown. (Funding secured in TEA-21 transportation authorizing legislation.)
- $2.41 million for the upgrade of Berkshire Regional Transit Authority (BRTA) buses.
- $150,000 for a comprehensive economic development action plan for the Northern Tier (Route 2 corridor) area.
