Abortion
No unborn child should be punished because their parent is facing hard times. I have no doubt that we should do more to reach out to mothers in need and provide assistance during their difficult circumstances. Just as it is wrong for the elderly to be abandoned in rough times, we must not sanction a policy that simply shrugs off the abortion problem and allows taking of innocent life.
Not only does abortion terminate a human life, but the procedure often leaves women with irrevocable emotional scars and physical harm. My opposition to abortion is just as much for the sake of the mother as for the sake of the child.
Many alternatives exist to abortion that are of benefit to both mother and child. Thousands of American families are waiting to adopt, and the federal government should do more to encourage adoption and provide support for those who carry a child to term instead of having an abortion.
In short, I cannot in good conscience use “choice” as an excuse to exterminate members of the human family who have no voice.
When I first ran for Congress in 1994, I promised the people of Georgia that I would be a voice for the unborn. Like most Americans, I find it reprehensible that some try to use federal dollars to oppress the unborn – the most vulnerable members of our society who cannot speak for themselves. I refuse to pick and choose which Americans “deserve” protection. Everyone has a constitutional right to life and liberty in this nation, including the unborn.
