Nadler Calls on Social Security Admin. to Open a New Brooklyn Office After Fire

BROOKLYN, NY – Congressman Jerrold Nadler strongly urged the Regional Commissioner of the United States Social Security Administration (SSA) to re-open a local office in southwestern Brooklyn.  The previous office serving Bay Ridge, Sunset Park, Borough Park and Dyker Heights – located at 6011 Fort Hamilton Parkway – burned down in a fire this August and has remained closed ever since.

"It is essential that the Social Security Administration reestablish an office in the same or nearby neighborhood from the former office," the Congressman stated.  "There are thousands of local Brooklynites who depend upon this office for essential day-to-day services.  Traveling miles to the downtown Brooklyn office or other Social Security offices is a difficult and sometimes impossible hardship for many."

Congressman Nadler has made clear to SSA the necessity for a location which is convenient and accessible to local residents. "It is encouraging that SSA officials are now actively seeking a new space near the Fort Hamilton Parkway site," said Rep. Nadler.

Meanwhile, the SSA is sending representatives out for weekly or twice-weekly visits to senior centers throughout the area to serve some of their elderly customers who are unable to make the trip downtown.  Those centers include the two following locations, with 14 others pending:

The Brooklyn Chinese-American Association Senior Center, 5000 8th Avenue

The Borough Park Jewish Community Council, 4608 13th Avenue

Also, services are available through the SSA’s toll-free phone number, 1-800-772-1213.
