Statement By U.S. Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin On Ceasefire In Lebanon

I commend the United Nations Security Council for unanimously adopting Resolution 1701 on August 11, 2006.  This resolution puts in place a full cessation of hostilities, helps the Lebanese government expand its sovereign authority over its whole territory, and lays out the framework for a lasting peace at the international border between Lebanon and Israel.

This U.N. Resolution places an embargo on the supply of arms to the terrorist organization Hezbollah and its militias in Lebanon, which began this war by killing and capturing Israeli soldiers and launching rockets into Israel.  The Resolution also authorizes the deployment of a much more robust international force to southern Lebanon, in conjunction with the deployment of Lebanese government troops.  This new force will monitor and enforce the cease fire, and will help the Lebanese government to exercise control over its own border and disarm Hezbollah by cutting off their supply of finances and weapons from Syria and Iran.
