Mollohan to Serve on Homeland Security Appropriations Panel

(February 12, 2003) -- Congressman Alan B. Mollohan, D-W.Va., will serve on the newly created panel that oversees funding of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The Appropriations Committee's Subcommittee on Homeland Security will set the budgets for the 22 agencies that comprise the department, which was established in response to the September 11 terrorist attacks.

"This subcommittee will be responsible for making critical decisions on how to best protect the health and safety of the American people in a dangerous world," Mollohan said. "It is a challenging assignment, and I am eager to begin it."

DHS is organized into four divisions responsible for border and transportation security; emergency preparedness and response; chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear countermeasures; and information analysis and infrastructure protection.

In addition to serving on the Homeland Security subcommittee, Mollohan will remain the top-ranking Democrat on the VA, HUD and Independent Agencies subcommittee. He also will continue to serve on the Commerce, Justice, State and Judiciary subcommittee. He will leave the DC subcommittee.

The assignments were made Wednesday at an organizational meeting of House Democrats on the Appropriations Committee. Mollohan has served on the committee since 1986.
