Education

As a former educator, Ginny is very sensitive to the needs of teachers and students and is uniquely interested in preparing Florida’s young people for post-secondary educational careers.  She is also a supporter of creating additional opportunities for continuing education for adults.

Ginny also believes that it is a duty of the government to provide top quality education to all students, regardless of their socioeconomic background.  All levels of government must commit to the improvement of our school system.  This will require an aggressive and innovative approach.

Supporting the No Child Left Behind Act is a high priority on Ginny's legislative agenda.  This forward-thinking legislation provides the reforms and resources necessary to help states put a highly qualified teacher in every classroom and ensure that all children can read by third grade.

It empowers parents by giving them an annual report card on school achievement, and new choices when schools consistently underperform.  In the 108th Congress, Ginny fought to increase education spending by $3.9 billion.  This brings discretionary spending for education to an all time high of $57 billion.  This number is $14.8 billion more than the highest levels of the Clinton Administration.

Secondly, Ginny is working to meet the needs of our hard working teachers.  In order for schools to be successful, classrooms must be headed by well-trained and enthusiastic teachers.  Recruitment will become more difficult as the demand for qualified teachers continues to increase to accommodate class size reductions and quality improvement.

Ginny has consistently supported measures to increase the student loan forgiveness limit for teachers in mathematics, science, and special education from $5,000 to $17,500.  Teachers must have the ability and the incentive to obtain the skills they need to effectively teach our children.

During these uncertain times, when multiple priorities are competing for federal funds, education cannot be sacrificed.  Ginny will continue to fight for increased funding in the No Child Left Behind Act and to ensure that our teachers and school districts have all the tools they need for successful implementation.
