Whitfield Recognized as "Friend of the Farm Bureau" HOPKINSVILLE, October 27 - Recognized for his strong support of farmers and the agriculture industry in Kentucky, U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield was named a Friend of the Farm Bureau by the Kentucky Farm Bureau at a presentation in Hopkinsville on Thursday.

The Friend of Farm Bureau award recognizes that a member of Congress has achieved a favorable voting record on Farm Bureau priority issues of at least 75 percent, and is also based on sponsorship of key legislation and responsiveness to contacts and requests by Farm Bureau members and leaders. Whitfield has won the award six consecutive times since taking office in 1995.

"Farming is such an integral part of the culture here in our part of the Commonwealth. I take great pride in advocating on behalf of farmers in the First District, and I am deeply honored to receive this award," said Whitfield.

Whitfield has been a strong voice for Kentucky farmers in Congress. During this session of Congress, Whitfield voted for a permanent reduction in the death tax to provide tax relief for family-owned farms and estates. Whitfield also voted for the Private Property Rights Protection Act, a bill that would prohibit state and local governments from seizing private property to be used for other commercial development purposes.

In 2002, Whitfield was a key supporter of the Farm Bill which provided much needed reform to conservation, energy, rural development, nutrition, and commodity programs. Whitfield also played a key role in passing the tobacco buyout in 2004, which provided $2.3 billion for tobacco quota owners and growers in Kentucky.
