Defense

I believe in a strong national defense and have consistently supported efforts to strengthen our nation’s military and provide our men and women in uniform with whatever they need to not only accomplish their missions, but also to enhance their quality of life.

The strength of our nation’s defense system has never been as much a priority as is it today. Our military is engaged in the long-term fight on The War on Terror and we must continue to provide them with the resources they need to win this conflict. Our military forces are engaged in war efforts on many fronts including Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) in Afghanistan, Operation Iraqi Freedom II (OIF2) in Iraq, and several other locations across the globe.

It is my distinct honor and privilege to represent the soldiers and families stationed at Fort Campbell. Fort Campbell has the third largest population of any Army installation in the world, encompassing more than 105,000 acres of land along the Kentucky and Tennessee border between the towns of Hopkinsville, KY and Clarksville, TN. Oak Grove and Hopkinsville work hand and hand with Fort Campbell to support the military personnel and local families residing in the area. The installation was opened in 1942 and was named after William B. Campbell, a statesman and Brigadier General of the United States Volunteers during the Civil War. Fort Campbell is home to the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles, which is the only Air Assault division in the world.

Currently the units at Fort Campbell are deployed all over the globe. Leading the way, the 101st Airborne Division is deployed to Iraq in support of OIF2. The two other major units at Fort Campbell are the 160th Special Operations Aviation Division and the 5th Special Forces Group; both are currently deployed as a part of OEF in Afghanistan and OIF2 in Iraq, as well as other operations in support of Department of Defense objectives. I am proud of the efforts these brave young men and women put forth every day in the midst of constant danger while fighting the War on Terror.

In my more than 11 years in office, I have helped secure millions of dollars for weapons programs to enhance the military readiness of the soldiers at Fort Campbell. I have also helped secure more than $173 million for critical military construction and family housing projects. I have consistently voted to increase defense spending to include significant pay increases and benefits for active-duty and retired military personnel. And I will continue to use my position in Congress to provide all that is necessary for the military personnel stationed in the First Congressional District of Kentucky.
